Frith Classical Guitar

Frith classical guitars are made using the best materials from around the world, collected over a long time since 1986. After 2006 the Guijosa model began to be made based on 1937 Hauser using techniques and strategies by great makers like Torres and Romanillos. No compromise is made to constantly challenge better methods, developing new ways to make a more musical and beautiful instrument.

This Guitar is in the style of the Spanish Instruments originating in the south. As is the Siguenza model still available built to the design of Jose Romanillos, and made using the methods taught by Jose and Liam. Below is a slide show of a guitar under construction.

cutting european spruce for guitar fronts in Austria

In this slide show are pictures of the 2002 visit to Austria with Tobias Braun and friends, where we worked together with the skilled woodworkers to select strip cut and split Spruce logs from above Innsbruck. In this way we controlled the cut to get parallel fibres (split) and good quarter sawn. With so many boards from one tree we could get to more intimately know our fronts.

This experience was repeated in 2004 with Toby, and Eddie Bloechinger when we worked on a tree from the Bohemian forest. This work fills a large part of my woodstore.

Moonwood

On one of the trips to Austria to select cut and split logs I was told a story by an Austrian in the music timber trade. An old folk lore about "moon wood". It was very interesting and according to our friend "the time of year the tree is felled and converted gave the timber special qualities." This time is during the spring equinox and with the new moon, I guess roughly Easter. He was telling me because this was exactly the logs we were converting. Recently, some players and dealers have asked about moon wood and what it is, and I was reminded of this folk tradition. Trying to rationalise the effect, maybe there is a gravitational field when the moon and the sun are to one side of the earth. A maximum distortion of the space time. Anyway I can't pretend to understand; but there is no doubt that the wood I collected on those trips are the most musical in my woodstore, especially after natural seasoning 6 or 7 years.
